Johnson Shut-Ins State Park, Missouri

The Black River has cut through sedimentary rock to old igneous rock underneath in the rock-strewn gorge. Hard volcanic rhyolite restricts the water's flow to rock-bound channels where cracks formed when the volcanic rock cooled and the Ozarks were uplifted.
